Lasertechnology at CERN
Since 2017, the pixel detector in the CMS detector (Compact Muon Solenoid) at CERN has been cooled by a complex pipe system that was laserwelded helium-tight at createch ag.
The cooling system developed by the University of Zurich consists of stainless steel pipes with a wall thickness of only 0.05 mm which must withstand a pressure of 200 bar. The 700 laser-welded areas in the cooling system have to be absolutely leak-proof.
The current pixel detector is expected to be in use until 2025 before it is replaced by a new and more powerful system.
